Tryon Creek's annual family celebration of owls, typically held the first or second Saturday of March (recent years: March 7-8. Free, all ages, at the Nature Center. The park's 645 acres and eight-plus miles of trails stay open year-round. Winter brings clearer views through the deciduous understory, quiet bird activity, and nearly empty trails on weekday mornings. Across the street from the property, it is the easiest way to start any winter day.

Portland Winter Light Festival

Portland's annual celebration of light, art, and community fills downtown with glowing installations, projections, and performances each February. Recent editions have run about a week in early-to-mid February, free and all ages, with anchor sites at Pioneer Courthouse Square (701 SW 6th Ave), the World Trade Center, and the Electric Blocks.
