November: Books, Markets & Giving Back

November brings one of the city's signature literary weekends downtown, the final farmers market of the season in Lake Oswego, and a forest-first alternative to the busiest shopping day of the year.

Portland Book Festival: PBF Cover to Cover

All week | Portland Art Museum and South Park Blocks venues

Literary Arts has expanded the festival to a full week, November 2-8, 2026. The main festival day is Saturday, November 7, at the Portland Art Museum and neighboring venues in the South Park Blocks, with a Friday Night Book Market on the evening of November 6. December: Lights on the River, in the Forest & on the Streets

December in the Portland area is defined by light: hundreds of decorated boats on the Willamette, more than a million bulbs at the Oregon Zoo, and one of the West Coast's most famous Christmas streets a short drive away.

Roughly 55 to 60 fully decorated boats parade along the rivers through December 3-20, 2026. The fleet also makes a Lake Oswego stop, arriving at George Rogers Park around 6:00 PM on its upriver runs, an easy evening outing from SW Portland. ZooLights at the Oregon Zoo

2026 dates have not yet been announced. Last season's run stretched from late November through early January with roughly 1.5 million lights, and reservations were required, so watch oregonzoo.org/lights for this year's schedule. A 15-minute drive from SW Portland.

Southeast Portland's storied block of holiday light displays traditionally runs December 15-31, 6:00 to 11:00 PM nightly. 2026 dates are not yet posted, so check peacocklane.org for the final schedule, including pedestrian-only nights.

Tryon Creek Winter Programs & Camp

Tryon Creek State Natural Area | Nature Center, 11321 SW Terwilliger Blvd

Winter brings Bird Walks and other seasonal programming at Tryon Creek, plus the Tryon Forest Adventures Camp during the December school break, with exact dates posted by Friends of Tryon Creek. In the meantime, the park's free Saturday Guided Nature Hikes meet every Saturday at 10:00 AM at the Nature Center. All of it is a short walk across the street from home.
